“The responsibility for creating a fool lies with the nation that raised him. There was no guarantee that they wouldn’t resent me for defeating a devout follower, even if it was for the Selection Trial.”

Stealing Arcana from Ahid had been enough of a blow to his power. The only thing I hadn’t expected was for him to be able to escape after being arrested.

“I suppose I could have shackled him to make him a little easier to catch.”

Misha looked at me with her unreadable gaze. “Do you feel guilty?”

“Who, me?”

“Just a little, I mean.”

“As I just said, if they choose to carry a spark, I’m under no obligation to put out their fires for them. Render unto the gods the things that are the gods’ and unto Jiordal the fools that are Jiordal’s.”

Misha giggled. “Sasha was right,” she said, seeing right through me. “It’s not your fault.”

“You always think too much of me. I’m not as kind as you say.”

Misha shook her head. “You’re kind.”

“Hey, what are you two whispering about? Is it something you can’t tell me?”

“It’s just idle talk,” I responded, accompanied by Misha, who answered at the same time.

“Idle talk.”

Sasha narrowed her eyes in suspicion.

“Oh, look! Something’s starting!”

Eleonore, who was in front of us, turned around and pointed at the stage. Followers clad in blue robes were appearing from behind the altar. It was the members of the Jiordal Choir. As soon as they stepped out onto the stage, they faced the large bonfire and began praying. The melody of a dragon bone harp accompanied their prayer.

“O Equis, the Almighty Radiance, we thank you for another hundred days of safety,” Irina said grandly. As the leader of the choir, she was highly ranked and respected amongst the clergy. Her robes were of a higher quality than those of the other members of the choir. She began to address the congregation. “Since ancient times, the winds of new songs have blown through Jiorhaze thanks to the will of Equis. Those winds have eliminated all kinds of disasters, blessing the citizens of Jiordal. This is proof that our god is always watching over us.” Irina raised her hands high into the air. “This is the Sojourner’s Psalm. The Almighty Radiance will dwell in our song today and become one with the sacred tune. Close your eyes and pray. Listen closely to the word of Equis.”

The choir turned around and exited the stage the way they’d come. The Rite of Sacred Song was performed by pilgrims visiting from outside of Jiorhaze. The choir was probably leaving to allow them on stage.

The followers around us closed their eyes obediently. Then a voice rang out.

“Listen closely, people of Jiordal.”

It was a familiar voice.

“The god we all desire does not exist in this world. Gods are merely order; they are not existences that bring salvation. The Almighty Radiance is a fabrication devised by the first pope. The present Pope, Golroana Delo Jiordal, knows this and has been covering up the fact this entire time.
